Tick Tock… the clock is ticking

Cog wheels

Clock cog wheels

One of the most familiar sights in Yalding is the church clock which is nearly 300 years old. The  lovely sound of the clock striking can be heard all over the village. Some will remember that the clock fell silent for about twenty years from the 1970s to the 90s after the bells were re-hung. Also, very recently the clock developed a fault that meant it struck only once on the hour, regardless of the time.

Yalding Parish Council has, in the past, very generously supported repairs to the clock mechanism. On this occasion, however, financial constraints made this impossible. The church (PCC) therefore appealed to the YCPS to help on this occasion.

YCPS Trustees met in July and agreed to offer support towards the cost of these repairs. In the past the Parish Council has paid the full cost of repairs and maintenance of the clock on the grounds  of its being considered a ‘historic village amenity’.

More recently it has paid half of the cost of repairs. YCPS has agreed to fill the gap on this occasion as it shares the Council’s view that the clock has a historic as well as a public value to the village.

We have therefore agreed to pay close to £1000 towards the repair on this occasion, hoping, nevertheless, that the Parish Council will once again be able to help at some time in the future.

The clock is also ticking on our photo competition, we have extended the deadline till after Easter 2015 – entries are still being welcomed.

A new perspective…

We were rather excited by the prospect of seeing the church and village from a new perspective. So when a new local business Skiris approached us and offered to take some footage of the church for our upcoming YCPS Display Day we could not wait…

On a lovely sunny afternoon the team turned up and set up some rather high-tech looking gear which we believe is not “boys with toys” but some fairly serious investment.

Two little drones duly raised up into the blue sky and buzzed around the church for about half an hour… at least until their batteries ran out!

The result is this rather stunning film that shows the church in a rather new perspective… it demonstrates rather well the importance of this structure in the heart of our village and how vital the work we do is to its survival.

Just click the picture below to view the film and please do tell us what you think!

Our big thanks to Skiris for their work and this resultant film…

Article as seen in Downs Mail December 2013

Article as seen in Downs Mail December 2013

This is no ordinary slave but none other than the Vicar of St Peter & St Paul, the Reverend Paul Filmer who has generously and some might say foolhardily donated his time for this promise.

He will be at your disposal from 9am to 5pm for anything within reason as long as it is legal, decent and honest!

So just use your imagination and let’s be creative on this one and make use of this slave in an original way as this offer is unlikely to ever be repeated!

The item is restricted to the area of Yalding, Laddingford and Collier Street (his parish).

We have an estimated value of £250 for this item.

The auction then goes live in three days time when you will be able to make your bids here
