An illustrated talk…Pitcairn The Mutiny & After

Our next fundraising event will take place on Sunday March 5th at Yalding Church from 6pm to 8pitcairnfinalpm when Yalding resident Martin Williams will give a talk on “Pitcairn” and “The Mutiny” and what has beset the Island thereafter.

Martin Williams served as Governor of Britain’s smallest Overseas Territory, the Pitcairn Islands, in the South Pacific Ocean, as part of his duties as British High Commissioner to New Zealand, in 1998-2001.

Although based in Wellington, Sue and he visited the territory twice during those years, which turned out to be of major significance for the community there.

Martin’s talk will cover the remarkable events surrounding Fletcher Christian’s famous mutiny on the Bounty against the ship’s commander, Captain Bligh, and the even more extraordinary history of the first few years of the mutineers’ life on Pitcairn. He will describe what life was like on Pitcairn at the time of Sue’s and his two visits there, and the memorable and bizarre experiences they had during those visits.

He will also discuss the sex cases which came to light around that time, and the legal charges which were brought and the trials which followed.

Tickets can be purchased via the Yalding Post Office or at the Village Tea Rooms at £5.00 per person

Alternatively we can reserve a ticket for collection on the night or they can be purchased on the door subject to available spaces at £6.00 per person
