Medieval Chest before renovation by YCPS

Medieval Chest before renovation by YCPS

You may remember that in 2012 YCPS was responsible for the repair of the church chest at Yalding, which had been used for generations to store church valuables.

This October, two dendrochronologists from Oxford (tree ring daters to most of us) visited the church to take samples of the oak from which the chest is made in order to calculate its age.

Medieval Chest renovated by YCPS

The renovated chest

There was some discussion when they came about where the wood had come from, including from as far away as the Baltic.

As it turned out, the chest was made from local wood, with a likely felling date range 1305–21. Wood was usually used fairly quickly after felling so we can confidently date our chest to the early 14th century.

This is just one of the many projects that the YCPS has funded over the years and illustrates well the importance of the work we do in raising funds to support the fabric of the church.

Please do continue to support our fundraising…remember the YCPS 2016 calendars are still on sale via Tim Chapman at Yalding Post Office or from the Village Tea Rooms. Alternatively please reserve using the form below and pick up from either outlet or at the Yalding Yuletide Fair on Saturday 5th December 2015

Ready for Anything…

A very fitting motto for all our teddies who braved their jump from the top of the Yalding Church tower at the Yalding Church Fete as it is also the Para’s motto!

What could be better than a sunny day and a plethora of teddies raining down from on high… It was a real unknown entity for the YCPS Trustees as this was the first time we had ever tried such an event and was not certain what to expect!

It had been a wet morning and the wind was a little blustery as we set up for the arrival of our “Brave Teddies”

There was a s”teddy” (pun intended) stream of well loved stuffed teds dressed in a wide range of costumes – A monkey in a Spiderman suit to a giant Teddy (Boris) with warm padded jerkin.

In face “Boris” was the first Teddy to make the descent into the drop zone as a test… Trustee Tim Chapman with relish launched him over the side and he plummeted earthward with an increasing velocity and bounced off a head- stone as he unceremoniously landed face down.

Our “Teddymedic” on hand declared he was fine and then as we hoisted the participating teddies to the top of the tower in our somewhat “Heath Robinson” lift built for this purpose. An expectant and vociferous crowd gathered below and the teddies began to ascend and then descend!

We had some forty plus entrants who had been generously sponsored. Our guest judge Margaret Preedie had agonised over who to award the prize for the best dressed teddy. This she duly awarded to “Fred Bear” – Lyn Hughes, who had made the trip from Cornwall and was jumping for his cousin Ted! with his knitted “Biggles” look and the most sponsorship raised was won by Martin Williams.

Extra prizes of rosettes and chocolate medals were also awarded to those deemed to have made a great flights, “Silver Bear” – Amy Maryon and “Snowy” – Sophie Maryon, “Super Ted” – Imogen O’Sullivan and Spider Monkey – Frank & Emily Goodacre

It was a hugely successful event for us as we raised over £500 with sponsorship that was then charity matched funded by Barclays Bank to ensure we have raised over £1000 to help bolster our funds to continue the support we offer.

We were delighted with this response and will welcome all entrants again next year at the 2016 Church Fete where we hope to see more Teddy Para’s who are “Ready for Anything”

Who dares jump…

On Saturday May 16th we held a little trial of launching some well loved teddy bears from the top of the Yalding Church tower as we plan to hold a mammoth “Sponsored Teddy Bear Parachute Jump” at the Church Fete on Saturday September 12th to help raise much needed funds for YCPS… more details to follow.

We had some very brave teddies who made the drop and thanks to all those that volunteered their loved ones to make the drop… here are just a few of the pictures… We are working on all the details regarding the Sponsored drop and will be posting more details very soon so watch this space.

Tick Tock… the clock is ticking

Cog wheels

Clock cog wheels

One of the most familiar sights in Yalding is the church clock which is nearly 300 years old. The  lovely sound of the clock striking can be heard all over the village. Some will remember that the clock fell silent for about twenty years from the 1970s to the 90s after the bells were re-hung. Also, very recently the clock developed a fault that meant it struck only once on the hour, regardless of the time.

Yalding Parish Council has, in the past, very generously supported repairs to the clock mechanism. On this occasion, however, financial constraints made this impossible. The church (PCC) therefore appealed to the YCPS to help on this occasion.

YCPS Trustees met in July and agreed to offer support towards the cost of these repairs. In the past the Parish Council has paid the full cost of repairs and maintenance of the clock on the grounds  of its being considered a ‘historic village amenity’.

More recently it has paid half of the cost of repairs. YCPS has agreed to fill the gap on this occasion as it shares the Council’s view that the clock has a historic as well as a public value to the village.

We have therefore agreed to pay close to £1000 towards the repair on this occasion, hoping, nevertheless, that the Parish Council will once again be able to help at some time in the future.

The clock is also ticking on our photo competition, we have extended the deadline till after Easter 2015 – entries are still being welcomed.
