Tick Tock… the clock is ticking

Cog wheels

Clock cog wheels

One of the most familiar sights in Yalding is the church clock which is nearly 300 years old. The  lovely sound of the clock striking can be heard all over the village. Some will remember that the clock fell silent for about twenty years from the 1970s to the 90s after the bells were re-hung. Also, very recently the clock developed a fault that meant it struck only once on the hour, regardless of the time.

Yalding Parish Council has, in the past, very generously supported repairs to the clock mechanism. On this occasion, however, financial constraints made this impossible. The church (PCC) therefore appealed to the YCPS to help on this occasion.

YCPS Trustees met in July and agreed to offer support towards the cost of these repairs. In the past the Parish Council has paid the full cost of repairs and maintenance of the clock on the grounds  of its being considered a ‘historic village amenity’.

More recently it has paid half of the cost of repairs. YCPS has agreed to fill the gap on this occasion as it shares the Council’s view that the clock has a historic as well as a public value to the village.

We have therefore agreed to pay close to £1000 towards the repair on this occasion, hoping, nevertheless, that the Parish Council will once again be able to help at some time in the future.

The clock is also ticking on our photo competition, we have extended the deadline till after Easter 2015 – entries are still being welcomed.

Thank you…

We are about to launch a major fundraising campaign in the next couple of weeks that we hope will raise significant monies to bolster our funds to support some expensive projects over the next year or two.

As a charity it is always hard to raise any money and we do depend heavily upon some philanthropic donations as well as the efforts we make to fundraise in imaginative ways.

We will as of December 4th 2013 have a purely on line “Auction” that will run for ten days on the run up to Christmas.

We have secured ten pretty valuable and in some cases pretty unique items that we hope will capture the imagination of our local community and also a much wider audience!

The support of those who have donated the items is much appreciated but equally some of our other friends need acknowledgement.

Graphic designer Andy Tonkin has given our logo a makeover that we are delighted with as it reflects perfectly the work YCPS endeavour to do!

TMS Printers TMS of Paddock Wood have also generously offered their support by providing us with Printed material to distribute and posters to publicise this event throughout the village and surrounding area.

We will provide more details on the Auction in the near future but just wanted to say a big thank you so far!

We have also just created a new Facebook page that will now replace our group page. Please hit the link on the right hand side and like the page. We will post articles via this Facebook Page as well as this main site!

Cheers
